Blushing — Scientists reveal the true cause of the phenomenon
Sudden redness of the face, including the ears, is a common problem that has nothing to do with the common belief that someone is talking about you. Doctors are convinced that "burning ears" actually a sign of an imminent visit to the doctor.
This is reported on the website of the National Health Service of England, NHS.
Blushing — medical advice
Skin redness can cause embarrassment and affect your daily life. There are things you can do to help stop it.
Doctors advise:
- Relax and do breathing exercises to help reduce stress and anxiety;
- Keep cool by removing a layer of clothing and drinking water;
- Use makeup that reduces skin redness in stressful situations, such as a job interview or presentation.
Doctors do not recommend
- Eat spicy food, drink alcohol and hot drinks if they cause redness.
Common causes of redness
Many things can cause redness in the skin of the face and ears. It is often caused by feelings of embarrassment, heat, or anxiety.
Sometimes other symptoms can give an idea of the cause of the redness.
- Rosacea — frequent redness of the face, small blood vessels and spots are visible under the skin.
- Menopause — hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, bad mood, decreased sex drive.
- Excessive sweating — heavy sweating, especially in the armpits, legs, face, and groin.
- Hyperactive thyroid gland — swelling of the neck, anxiety and irritability, mood swings, difficulty sleeping, fatigue.
Some medications can also cause redness, so it's worth checking the side effects of all the medications you take to see if there is any redness or flushing.
Medical advice
If the redness interferes with daily activities and the person believes the redness may be caused by a medical condition or medication, they should consult a physician. Treatment of redness depends on the cause.
